An author of a scholarly article or book will usually include their credentials, affiliations or place of employment. Look on the first or last page of an article, or in the “about the author” section of a book.

Check to see if the author has published other articles or books on this or related topics.

Check the reference list at the end of the article. This will give you an idea of how completely the author has researched the topic and what sources they have used.
