Newspapers, tabloids and other forms of similar media are not considered academic sources.

They are, however, a primary source as they provide firsthand accounts of events or experiences.

Academic journals are the most relevant for research and study purposes as they are often refereed (also called "peer reviewed" or "scholarly").
