Many factors may impact on reading an ebook, such as web browser, vendor platform and license restriction.

If you have difficulty accessing or reading an ebook online, the following steps could help:

  • Using a different web browser or open a new incognito or In Private browser window.

  • Search the ebook title in Library Search

  • Click on the "Access electronically" link.

If a different web browser allows you to access the resource, please clear the cache of your primary web browser. This is often the cause of many e-resource access issues.

Many ebooks have limits on how many users can access it at the same time. To see how many copies are available, check the “Availability” section on the details page. If there are no copies available, you can try again later. For ebooks with a limited amount of users we recommend that you save the sections you need as PDFs and then log off. This both ensures your access to the content you need as well as prevents further bottlenecking for other users.

Most ebook platforms – i.e. Ebook Central– disconnect after a period of inactivity. If this occurs, you could simply refresh the page and log in again. If this doesn’t work, please close the original window and access the book through Library SEARCH again.

If you continue to experience access issues please contact us at uow-library@uow.edu.au and provide as much detail as possible to assist us with your enquiry, including: ebook title, your web browser, and the steps you’ve taken to access the ebook. Screenshots and a record of error messages are also appreciated.

  1. This information above does not seem to answer WHY you disconnect from an ebook. From my experience over the years, it happens when there is no activity detected and you are logged out after a certain amount of time. You will need to refresh your page & log back in to gain access to the ebook again.
