When trying to export results in a RIS format from Scopus, the following error message may appear:

"An error occurred exporting to RIS. Please try again."

There are a few possible options that can resolve this issue.

  • Rerun your search in a different browser, or in an incognito/private window.
  • Clear your cache and browser history
  • Ensure EndNote or your reference manager is open before exporting your results.
    • After selecting 'Export' in Scopus, ensure under 'What information do you want to export?' and 'Citation Information' you have "Source & document type" selected to ensure the proper encoding for the data is available.
    • If you are using Chrome or Microsoft Edge, the .RIS file will be downloaded to your downloads folder. Once the .RIS file is downloaded, instead of clicking on it, right click the folder and from the pop up box select 'Always open files of this type". This will allow all future .RIS files to be exported directly into EndNote.
    • If you are using Firefox, a .RIS file should open directly in your EndNote Library and the references will be imported.

For step-by-step information on exporting from Scopus into Endnote, please review the UOW Library - EndNote Workbook, section 7. Exporting references from a database
